On February 20, 2020, Can Tho University (CTU) organized a Workshop and Seminar “Solutions to cope with drought and salinity for plants and animals in the Mekong Delta” with the participation of more than 300 representatives from institutes, schools, departments, branches, agricultural extension centers of provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mekong Delta is a key agricultural production area of \u200b\u200bthe country, however, in recent years, the complicated situation of drought and salinity has significantly affected the productivity and quality of many plant varieties and livestock. . Since the end of 2019, many experts have commented that “the Mekong Delta is about to face a drought and salinity season that comes earlier and more severe than every year” and the fact has shown that saline intrusion in the first two months of 2020 has taken place rapidly. sharper than the average of many years ago. Therefore, the Seminar-Seminar “Solutions to cope with drought and salinity for crops and livestock in the Mekong Delta” has practical significance in order to share research information and create exchange opportunities between farmers, management agencies. Physicists and scientists on solutions that make an important contribution to proactively dealing with drought and salinity problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the seminar, experts and scientists of CTU presented the following contents: Saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta – Challenges and solutions; Solutions to limit the effects of salinity for crops in the Mekong Delta; Management of arable land in drought and salinity conditions; Cultivation of crops in drought and salinity conditions; Livestock production and solutions to cope with drought and salinity in the Mekong Delta; Application of control network in monitoring saline intrusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accordingly, experts have assessed the situation of drought and salinity in the Mekong Delta, from which to propose many coping solutions for plants and animals such as monitoring the tides to get fresh water, preventing the orchards from being salted. by measures to strengthen sluices, dykes and embankments to prevent salinity; fresh water storage in garden ditches; salinity measurement; prevent water loss, besides, when the garden is salty, it is necessary to reduce the water demand of the plants (pruning branches, cotton, fruits), limit evapotranspiration (ground cover), increase salt tolerance ( spray hormones) and provide nutrients for plants (organic fertilizer). For measures to cope with drought and salinity in livestock, experts suggest choosing plants that adapt, conserve and make use of the mangrove ecosystem for livestock; selecting livestock breeds suitable to the locality, adapting to drought and salinity; choose a new industrial livestock model, a smart combination husbandry model, create a source of feed for livestock towards organic, safe and quality products and reduce emissions,…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
