On the morning of July 12, 2024, at Can Tho University, the Department of Science and Technology under the Ministry of Industry and Trade organized a seminar to propose some contents related to the development of biotechnology and bioindustry to support the construction of the “Project for the Development of Biotechnology in the Economic-Technical Sector of Industry.”
Attending the seminar were Prof. Dr. Trần Ngọc Hải – Vice President of Can Tho University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Hiếu Trung – Vice President of Can Tho University, representatives from various schools, departments, and institutes affiliated with Can Tho University; representatives from the Department of Science and Technology of Can Tho City, the Department of Industry and Trade of Can Tho City, and businesses.
On behalf of the drafting team for the project, Dr. Đặng Tất Thành from the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Industry and Trade, reported on some information related to the current status of biotechnology development in the food processing industry and the draft for building the “Project for the Development of Biotechnology in the Economic-Technical Sector of Industry.” The project outlines 10 implementation contents: refining institutions and policies (amending and supplementing regulations, attracting experts and scientists) to serve the development of the bioindustry in the industrial sector; promoting research, innovation, and the application of biotechnology in both light and heavy industries as well as energy; developing biotechnology products from regional specific raw materials; enhancing design and manufacturing capabilities for technological equipment, automation, and 4.0 technology in the bioindustry; investing to improve the capacity of laboratories and research and application centers; establishing a connection center to support businesses and develop biotech enterprises (startups, technology incubation); developing the biotechnology market; enhancing the quality of human resources; implementing international cooperation activities; and perfecting the database system and deploying information and communication activities.

During the seminar, representatives from Can Tho University discussed various aspects of research, training, and international cooperation activities in biotechnology that are currently being implemented. They also proposed several development directions for biotechnology suitable for the Mekong Delta region, such as advanced processing technology to enhance the value of agricultural products from the Mekong Delta; microbial technology, vaccines, and feed for aquaculture, etc.

In sharing during the seminar, representatives from the Department of Science and Technology of Can Tho reported on the achievements of the S&T sector in implementing Resolution No. 36-NQ/TW dated January 30, 2023, on “Developing and Applying Biotechnology for Sustainable Development of the Country in the New Situation.” Notable activities include: selecting and implementing scientific and technological tasks in the field of biotechnology to promote the research and application of biotechnology in real production and daily life; advising the Chairman of the People’s Committee of the city to approve the framework project for scientific and technological tasks on the city-level gene fund for the period of 2021-2025; supporting businesses applying biotechnology to participate in enterprise incubation programs, productivity and quality improvement programs, modernization and upgrading of equipment; alongside strengthening the capacity for biological testing and biosafety of specialized agencies under the Department. They also shared difficulties regarding mechanisms and policies in applying results from scientific and technological tasks and proposed solutions to create favorable mechanisms for implementing tasks under the “Project for the Development of Biotechnology in the Economic-Technical Sector of Industry.”
Representatives from Sao Mai Group and Phu Sa Genomic Company shared their results from applying biotechnology in businesses during the time and proposed contents of the project to support businesses’ participation in the project. The feedback and opinions shared during the seminar were noted by the drafting team to refine the project for the development of biotechnology in the economic-technical sector of industry to make it suitable and to present it to the government in 2024.
