On October 4, the Department of Science and Technology of Can Tho City coordinated with the Institute of Nuclear Research under the Ministry of Science and Technology to organize a rehearsal to respond to radiation and nuclear incidents with the hypothetical situation “Cope with situation of transporting open radioactive sources” at Mai Chi Tho street, residential area 586, Phu Thu ward, Cai Rang district, Can Tho city.

The exercise aims to equip the core forces with necessary knowledge and skills in radiation and nuclear incident preparedness and response. Carrying out training and troubleshooting with open radioactive source transport situations to ensure the following principles and requirements: treatment of victims, control of incidents, prevention and reduction of environmental damage, reduce the potential for biological effects on responders and the public.

Thereby, strengthening propaganda to raise public awareness and helping facilities using and transporting radioactive sources, as well as agencies and departments better understand the work of preparing and responding in time. Timely and effectively when something goes wrong.

Speaking at the exercise, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Dung said: In recent years, the use of radioactive sources in the fields of industry, agriculture, health… has continuously increased. The city has 12 facilities using radioactive sources; In which, Can Tho Cancer Hospital regularly uses 4 open radioactive sources for nuclear medicine activities to treat patients. Radioactive sources used in many provinces in the Mekong Delta are also transported through Can Tho, so radiation and nuclear incidents may occur.
